  1. How does the LAP-BAND® System differ from the gastric bypass procedure?

The LAP-BAND® procedure, which is the only HPB and FDA-approved weight-loss procedure, is a purely restrictive approach with no stomach stapling or intestinal rerouting, unlike the gastric bypass. A band is simply wrapped around the upper stomach, thereby limiting the amount of food that can be consumed at any given time and making patients feel full sooner and longer. With the gastric bypass procedure, the stomach is stapled to create a small stomach pouch and a portion of the intestines is cut and re-routed, causing fewer nutrients and calories to be absorbed.

  3. How much weight is typically lost with the LAP-BAND® System?

Typically, patients tend to lose between 50 to 75 percent of their excess weight 3-5 years after the procedure. Weight loss with the LAP-BAND® System is a gradual and natural process. Having the LAP-BAND® System is about more than just losing weight, it also helps lower your risk of weight-related health conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, joint pain, and many others. Additionally, it helps improve your appearance and boosts your self-esteem.

  5. What are the qualifications for becoming a LAP-BAND® SYSTEM candidate?

The patient must be at least 18 years of age or older, with a BMI of 40, and/or at least twice their ideal weight or 100 pounds more than their ideal weight. In addition, most eligible patients have been overweight 5 years or more and have a history of failed weight-loss attempts with traditional weight-loss methods. Even if you do not meet the BMI or weight criteria, you still may be considered for the procedure if your BMI is 35 or higher and you are suffering from serious weight-related health problems.

  9. What is the cost of the LAP-BAND® SYSTEM procedure?

The cost of the LAP-BAND® System procedure depends on your individual case. Hospitalization, and other procedural fees vary, and you need to ask your physician specifically about the costs that apply to your procedure. You may have your procedure reimbursed by your insurance carrier or have to pay or finance most of it yourself. Currently, insurance reimbursement is determined on a person-by-person basis as opposed to an insurance-by-insurance basis. Talk to your physician to determine your individual LAP-BAND® procedure cost and payment options.
